ITT – Currently, the trend of studying abroad to foreign countries like US, UK, Australia, Canada… has been becoming more popular. In particular, UK has become increasingly attractive destination when the number of UK students studying abroad has doubled in less than a decade.
Since official figures from the UK’s leading universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and Birmingham shown that international students had increased from 39,000 to 75,000 students in recent year. According to British Ministry of Internal Affairs, there were about 11,000 Vietnamese students who have been studying in UK.
While UK students studying abroad are increasingly a large presence at the prestigious universities of UK, the number of Britain students enrolled in these schools was declined. Oxford’s data shown that the number of “local” students had dropped from 10,839 to 9,278. The number of Britain students studying at Cambridge also dropped from 10,014 to 9,598.
Tuition increased dramatically over the past decade. Because some universities have been charging tuition fees for foreign students up to £15,000/year ($22,900), but this cannot prevent the “wave” of foreign students come to the UK to live and study international programs.
International students had a tremendous importance which contributed to the university finance as well as for the UK economy. A recent survey of London First organization and PricewaterhouseCoopers auditing firm shown that foreign students were contributing 2.3 billion pounds/year (3.5 billion dollars) for the UK economy.
The budget of the universities had a substantial contribution from the tuition of UK students studying abroad. For example, at Queen Mary, a local student or who came from the European Union (EU) were paying £9,000/year ($13,700) to get a bachelor’s degree in dentistry, while oversea students would have to spend £30,000/year ($45,880).
