Does genetic characteristics have something to do with Mathematics ability?

ITT – A recent study has shown that parents who have Mathematics ability will have children with excellent results in this field.

A research team from University of Pittsburgh (USA) examined the influence of parents on the Mathematics ability of children. It showed that children, whose parents perform well in math, no matter “accidentally” or “intentionally” will inherit those skills. The research was conducted on 54 children from 5 to 8 years old and 51 parents aged 30-59.

Skills and ability to learn Mathematics of the parents were measured through a test. There was as superficial similarity in the results of parents and children of how they remember simple calculations, analysis and methods.

Awareness of children about numbers can also be predicted based on those of their parents, for example, the ability to recognize a box with 15 balls which is certainly more than 10 fruit boxes without counting. Researchers believed that the awareness of this issue begun at the stage of infancy. Thereby, we can see that the relationship in mathematics skills between parents and children can be a combination of genetics and environment.

Another research from University of Missouri (USA) explained that children are more likely to numerate when they start kindergarten if there is clear understanding of words relating to number and quantity. Children understanding that plus means more and minus is less will also have better results in Mathematics when in kindergarten.

Mathematics ability can support the children’s learning in preschool and help them succeed in solving more difficult problems later on the journey of education.
