Singapore overtaking China in Asia’s top university ranking

ITT – Singapore has just overtaken China in the race for the first place in Asia’s top university ranking by Times Higher Education magazine. This is the second consecutive year that the National University of Singapore was rated as the best University in Asia.

Phil Baty, the editor of Times Higher Education, said National University of Singapore is the role model for other schools in the area. Besides, he said that Asian universities are capable of competing with the famous and long-standing universities of England and America.

Asia’s top university ranking based on research performance and teaching environment. The next places in the ranking are: Peking University (China), Tsinghua University (China), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and the University of Hong Kong (China).

The top 5 places in the ranking hasn’t changed significantly. But some of lower positions appeared to have a great variation. Specifically, the number of Indian universities doubled from last year, from 16 up 33 universities. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s number has tripled, from 2 up to 7 schools. Japan is the most represented country with 69 universities, accounting for nearly a quarter of the rankings.

In Southeast Asia, with the number 10, Thailand was honored as the country which has many best schools in this area. However, the researcher said that Malaysia university of Malaysia has a great potential. The University of Malaya said the number of international students enrolled at the school is increasing. The school is running English programs to adapt to this change.

None of universities in Vietnam was on the list Asia’s top university ranking in 2017. Previously, in December last year, the survey of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) informed that Singapore students were the best of Math, Science and Reading. In these 3 subjects, Singapore students have demonstrated knowledge and skills equivalent to the level of students in the US, France and Sweden who are 2 years older than them.
