Sleep crisis in students

ITT – Recently, Dr. Kevin Mattingly, Academic Director of Riverdale School (New York, US), talked about sleep crisis in students at an event in Hanoi.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the amount of time people needs to sleep varies according to age, but one in three adults in US will have a person who does not sleep at least 7 hours a day.

Children 6-12 years old should sleep 9-12 hours a day, children between the ages of 13-18 need to sleep 8-10 hours a day, and from 18 years old to sleep at least 7 hours a day.

There are many students that not sleeping enough in many countries around the world. According to a survey by Korean Ministry of Education, 765 high schools in the country have more than 82,000 students suffering from sleep crisis.

At an early age, the effects of aging do not appear to be serious, but sleep disorders are more likely to lead to early age-related illnesses, such as halving memory and lack of concentration.

The main cause of lacking sleep is learning stressfully. The amount of knowledge, exercises, lessons, too many exams to solve it can take quite a long time.

Dr. Kevin Mattingly said: “In order to study every day effectively and not to wake up late, managing time is very important. Students must exercise, eat well and spend time participating in social activities to avoid sleep crisis.”
