Strategy for learning academic English vocabulary

ITT – Academic English vocabularies are considered as cutting-edge of students of international schools in order to strengthen their studying affairs in foreign universities. Because of being used in academic environment, students should have strategy for learning academic English vocabulary so as to advance in their studies.

Obviously, academic English words have a huge impact on almost skills such as discussing, making presentations, writing, reporting… Enhancing academic English vocabularies will be a considerable advantage for students to practice their skills well in foreign studying environment. Some recommended strategy for learning academic English vocabulary as following:

1. Reading different topics: Basically, this way is similar to the one of practicing oral English through different topics in classes. Learning vocabularies in each specific situation could help students not only remember these words easier than ever because they understood the content of the topic, but also the method of applying these words in reality.
2. Reading specialized news: Academic English is not only applied in foreign university environment for reading and understanding activity or homework practice, but also used in professional working environment. Therefore, students could practice their academic English through reading specialized news such as BBC, CNN, The Economists, Bloomberg and other programs.
3. Using thesaurus dictionaries: Students could improve their English vocabularies by using thesaurus dictionaries. Academic words sometimes actually have similar meaning to the ones they have known. Therefore, students could find academic words by looking up the thesaurus dictionaries. Even though they could be overwhelmed when they have too many new words to remember, this is still a good way to help them be familiar with unknown vocabularies.

   

4. Listing academic vocabularies: Embedding long lists of academic words seems to be impossible. However, students could create and use those lists to enrich their English vocabularies. They would remember essential words in their minds by dividing these into different small groups, then noting on memo papers and sticking on the walls of their rooms. And you should have this strategy for learning academic English vocabulary.
