ITT – Japanese is the most difficult language to learn in the world. Why do students choose IB Japanese? What is the requirement for a good IB Japanese teacher?
Overview
Japanese in IB program course is divided into 2 courses: ab initio for beginner and Language B for students having the experiment. For students choosing IB Japanese B, they will have a choice to study the Standard level (SL) or High level (HL).
The course includes many topics. There are three core sections for both SL and HL which are communication and media, global issues and social relationship. In addition, IB Japanese teacher chooses two more topics from given year. During the course, students will have a chance to explore the culture and gain the knowledge about Japan via the language of this country.
The different between SL and HL course is the number of study hours, the depth of information, exercises and criteria for assessments. In details, students in HL course have to study and analysis two Japanese literatures which are not easy.
Good IB Japanese teacher
During IB Japanese, some challenges and difficulties existed require that teachers must have good knowledge and teaching methods to solve these problems.
First of all, Japanese is a complex language because it uses three hieroglyphic character sets: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Kanji based on the Chinese characters is the most difficult one to learn. It is not easy to remember because each word can be written in many different ways.
The second challenge is about Japanese grammar. Japanese grammar is opposite to that of English. Learners, especially students in the international program who use English as the mother language, always confuse in using grammar then often make mistakes. In English, the order in a sentence is subject, verb and object while Japanese use the opposite order which is subject, object and verb.
Due to the difficulty in both Japanese language and literature, it is hard for students to follow lessons, leading to unexpected results. Therefore, IB Japanese teacher must have great knowledge about Japanese language and good English communication skills to transmit information to students. Professional pedagogical skills and good teaching methods can make lessons more attractive.
