Science

ITT – Science is the process of research and experimentation in many areas of human life. Science in English is taught as General Science at primary and secondary levels and is divided into Physics, Chemistry and Biology at high school level.

The Science program consisting of knowledge from the basic to the advanced levels is divided into two levels:

  • Primary level: Living things including humans, plants and animals; environment; introduction to forces and energy including light, sound, heat, electricity…
  • Secondary level: Biology consists of human, plant, animal and micro-organisms…; Chemistry includes air, O2, CO2, H2O, atomic structure, reactions and molecules…; Physics comprises of force and energy, heat, light, sound, magnetism and electricity…

The difficulty in learning Science in English is usually unavoidable because:

  • It is required to know a sufficient amount of scientific glossary in English in order to understand the contents of lessons.
  • Science subjects contain a heavy load of knowledge and a mix of theoretical and practical studies of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Science subjects contain many abstract theories and concepts such as virus, DNA, atoms, molecules and reactions that students might not be able to understand completely and observe them with their own eyes even though these concepts and theories have been discovered and proven by the scientists.

Therefore, students should have an appropriate method to study Science in English:

  • Focusing on studying scientific glossary, taking note of important terms that occur many times and studying vocabulary on a variety of topics such as the body parts, the environment or forces.
  • Using mind maps or notebooks is necessary to help students memorize and review the vast amount of knowledge.
  • Conducting experiments to enrich knowledge and have a general overview of a variety of areas of Science which are easy to observe and apply in practice.
