ITT – The life of international students in the US is not as favorable as you think, because the difference in culture and language has pushed international students into “awkward” situations.
Before choosing to study in the US, you do not think that you have to get used to the changes to integrate. Especially those who choose the homestay form must pay more attention, to be really comfortable to ensure the learning.
Language barrier
Despite many years of learning English in Vietnam, achieving a relatively good score on exams, most of you are very surprised and hard to understand when speaking English with Americans. Surely one thing is that you cannot pronounce correctly before coming to the US so almost everyone will fall into the situation of “English like the wind”.
The life of international students in the US often falls into tension and narrows for a long time, even without talking to anyone easily leading to autism. Please join the school clubs, because it is a good environment for open communication. Proactively chat with some American friends and if lucky, they will help them enthusiastically.
For lessons in class, you should choose at “offline hour” – take a break to ask teachers. There is a secret that American teachers love Asian students’ eagerness to learn, so they enthusiastically share.
Culture shock
Culture shock is said to be a “common” phenomenon in the life of international students in the US. Because of disagreements about language and activities, the pace of life, the way of thinking and strange customs makes them unable to integrate immediately and create feelings of depression.
The only thing is that students before coming to the United States should research in advance through the forums about the area where they will live and study, learn about the natural conditions and culture of that area.
Choosing a homestay
Americans respect the personal space very highly, so it’s always best to consult with them whenever they want to do something. In order to make life in America easier, you need to be concerned about asking and praising. Unlike Vietnam, people in America like to praise each other without fear of being fake or cliché.
You should also often talk to the host family, most hosts are in a conditional family group, they accept international students to the United States to study primarily to experience life, cultural exchange, not necessarily for the money. Try to help them understand a little about the culture and lifestyle of Vietnam, you’ll learn more about the American way of life, improve English and have the opportunity to travel.
