ITT – Under the new law, schools in US will start classes no earlier than 08:00 AM for junior high school and no earlier than 08:30 AM for high school.
California will become the first state of US to apply the late start time at junior high schools and high schools. The law was signed and passed by Governor Gavin Newsom in late 2019 to help students get enough sleep. The law will take effect in the 2022-2023 school year. In the past, the average admission time for schools in California was 0:00 AM, some was 07:30 AM.
Proponents of the new law say that being late for class has many benefits for students. Studies have shown that a later start at school helps reduce sleep deprivation. Getting enough sleep can improve academic success, mobility, mental health and reduce sleep-related traffic accidents. Some parents feel that a later start time can make transportation to school easier, especially for students who stay up late doing homework.
According to Newsom, not only applies to scientific studies, the law also gives a period of 3 years for schools in US to have an appropriate implementation plan. In 2014, American Academy of Pediatrics conducted a study, concluding that not getting enough sleep is a serious health problem for teenagers.
Despite the support of several medical associations, the new law has also been controversial among parliamentarians and schools in US. Sumit Bhargava, a pediatrician at Stanford University and a pediatric sleep specialist at Stanford Health, said the new law was a “great joy” because the brain of teenagers is still developing. With chronic development, lack of sleep increases the risk of future illnesses and distractions during the school day.
