Is IB Math difficult?

ITT – Math is one of the most selected subjects in IB program – a program considered to be most standardized and has highest quality. So, is IB Math difficult?

With its prestige and its alignment with international organization to offer strictly designed courses, not only parents but students also choose to follow subjects of IB program. Among that, IB Math is the most selected. IB Math is divided into four small levels with two main levels are SL (Standard Level) and HL (Higher Level).

  • Mathematical Studies SL: Focus on foundational topics which are connected to each other and focus on the understanding of students towards basic definitions and reasoning developments.
  • Mathematics SL: Focus on introducing core and crucial definitions through the development of simple calculus skills that students can use to apply in practical problems.
  • Mathematics HL: Focus on developing advanced knowledge by going deeper in to Mathematic forms and structures along with solving practical problems and understanding the connections between all matters.
  • Further Mathematics HL: Focus on various perspectives related to Math and fully develop the definition and understanding about the subject.

Students can choose one of these 4 levels to follow depending on their abilities and future goals. As we can see that the difficulties level of IB Math as well depends on the choices of students. If students choose SL levels, the knowledge would not be too difficult to absorb and the skills needed for the course are relatively basic.

However, if students choose HL levels, since the knowledge of this level is more advanced and requires more complex skills, not to mention the college level knowledge included in the curriculum, the difficulties level of IB Math would be high unless students have passion and diligence for it.

Moreover, if students are not equipped with the specialized vocabulary of Math in English or do not have guidance form tutors, studying IB Math can be challenging since mathematic textbooks and materials of the program are in English. Hence, the enhancement of academic English vocabulary is essential if students want to study the subjects with fewer problems.
