ITT – Science has become one of the crucial subjects having been included in education programs a long time ago because of its usefulness and its broad application. So, what are the features of this subject? Why Science is difficult?
Science consists of social to natural knowledge. Hence, it is too broad for learners to master it all in a short time. Moreover, the knowledge between majors is related to each other which requires learners to have skills and diligence. Science international programs also require learners’ independence and high self-awareness. But why Science is difficult?
In Vietnam, the subject is included in curriculum from elementary level. At this level, students have the chance to get familiar with simple definition of matters and phenomena in daily life. The difficulty level will gradually increase through time. The main knowledge exchanging method is noting what was taught by teachers. This is a passive learning style. It is contrary to Science in English which aims to train students to self-learn, self-review and self-solve problems from different perspectives. Teachers only play the role of a core information provider and sometimes help students answering questions during learning process. Therefore, if they are not familiar with this style, students can hardly catch up with the class and find it is hard to learn the subject.
With the goal of developing individual self-reasoning ability, Science can cause troubles for students who are used to traditional learning method – heavy on theories, pay little attention on practical experiments or creative application. They can easily become confused while studying the subject, not to mention the fact that the subject’s score is not only evaluated based on the knowledge acquired in class but also on the practical experience and reasoning ability of learners. Therefore, in order to achieve the best results, learners need to adjust their learning strategies effectively.
Another factor that makes this subject hare to learn is the language barrier. Science international programs are all taught in English. Hence, if students don’t have a strong English foundation, it is difficult when they are in class or when they exchanging knowledge or ideas related to the lessons with teachers and their classmates. Moreover, the number of specialized terms and words of the subject is large and they are hard to remember. It requires students to try harder since English is not their mother tongue. That’s why Science is difficult.
