What is ACT?

ACT (American College Testing) is used to assess the academic ability of high school students who want to step into the threshold of college. ACT exam structure is as follows:

  • English: 75 questions in 45 minutes.
  • Math: 60 questions in 60 minutes.
  • Reading: 40 questions in 35 minutes.
  • Science: 40 questions in 35 minutes.
  • Writing (optional): Argument on an issue in 40 minutes.

ACT score is calculated based on 4 parts: Verbal, Math, Reading, and Science. Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36. The official score will be equal to the average of the 4 sections. However, to get into the top universities, the score must be 30 or above. The writing section is optional and if you choose to take the exam, the score will be scored separately on a scale of 1-12.

However, ACT announced three changes to the exam for students planning to participate clearly and strategically, one of them is the ACT super score. That means a student took the full-part ACT standardized test at least once may choose to retake one or more specific sections that they perform poorly. For example, on the first test, students achieved maximum (36/36 points) in Verbal, Math, Reading, but only 30/36 points in Science. If students want to improve their score, they only need to retake Science instead of having to retake all four sections as currently prescribed. But how does ACT exam happen?
